States expand prescription-writing authority

Lawmakers looking for ways to cut health care costs and ease patient access to common prescription drugs are expanding the pool of professionals who are allowed to write prescriptions. Pharmacists, psychologists and certified midwives are among a growing collection of medical professionals who are able to prescribe medications, but many doctors are opposed to the practice.
