San Francisco district feels budget crunch

Even though the San Francisco Unified School District spends $8,126 per student, an amount that surpasses that of most other state districts, soaring retiree health benefits are straining its coffers. Until recently, retiring teachers could draw lifetime health care benefits after just five years of work in the district, a perk that is still enjoyed by custodians and other service employees.
