Corporate-bond issuance plunges as investors shun risk

No companies issued bonds in the U.S. on Tuesday; last year, on the day after Memorial Day, $2.2 billion in sales were done. Two covered-bond sales in Europe raised €1.35 billion, compared with €6.5 billion in bond issuance the same day last year. The near closure of the market for corporate-bond sales comes as investors avoid risk and move to the safest government debt.
