Corporate-bond issuance plunges as investors shun risk

Two covered-bond sales Tuesday in Europe raised €1.35 billion, compared with €6.5 billion in bond issuance during the same day last year. In the US, no companies issued bonds. On the day that followed Memorial Day 2009, $2.2 billion in bond sales were done. The near closure of the market for corporate-bond sales comes as investors avoid risk and move to the safest government debt.
