A landscape where all the trees are the same species and age has drawbacks, points out Valerie Blaine, a naturalist for the Kane County Forest Preserve in Illinois. Blaine practices what she preaches. At her ranch home in the St. Charles area, she installed many kinds of trees and shrubs to add diversity to the forest floor. She also cut back on the amount of lawn, since it required a lot of water and chemicals.
