Chief executives who draw $1 salaries tend to style themselves as team players making grand gestures for the good of their companies, but a study suggests the tactic is often little more than a PR stunt. One-buck bosses such as Apple's Steve Jobs, Oracle's Larry Ellison, and Whole Foods' John Mackey gave up an average of $610,000 in annual wages, the study found, but gained more than $2 million in stock options. "Rather than being the sacrificial acts they are projected to be, our findings suggest that adoptions of $1 CEO salaries are opportunistic behavior of the wealthier, more overconfident, influential CEOs," the study says.
