Building codes in Texas need improving

Building codes in coastal areas of southern Texas remain the same as they did three years ago, when one of the country's worst hurricane seasons swept along the Gulf Coast. While Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana all bolstered their building standards following the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons, Texas has maintained its lax policies, including unevenly enforced codes and builder-enforced codes. Although a statewide building code would improve and regulate standards, it would require additional enforcement work and could be costly.
