India to establish regulatory body for biotech crops

The Indian government has drafted the National Biotechnology Regulatory Bill of 2008 to establish an independent body that would oversee the development and release of biotech crops and other products. Biotech Consortium India Ltd. will undertake public consultations on the proposed agency, which is expected to have a risk-assessment division and cross-sectoral offices for legal affairs, capacity building and economic evaluation.
