Finding a second without choosing a successor

Every CEO needs a second-in-command, writes Jay R. Galbraith, but not every No. 2 needs to be a potential successor. Galbraith suggests moving away from the traditional CEO/COO relationship and instead creating a chief administrative officer role or an "office of the CEO" that is clearly focused on helping run the business, not preparing to take over one day.
