Panel says government needs to better protect privacy online

An advisory board to the Commerce Department said policies and practices need to be adopted by the government to boost protection of private information sent to the government by individuals. "The Privacy Act was written in 1974 and it really hasn't been updated since then," said Dan Chenok, chairman of the Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board. "The principles have stood the test of time, but the procedures ... and how those principles are applied haven't."
