Is Twitter an effective classroom tool?

A professor at the University of Texas at Dallas is using Twitter as a way to help facilitate classroom discussion among students. In 140 characters or less, students post comments, questions or feedback during class via Twitter -- an exercise that the professor says is intended to engage students in the lessons.
