Australian stadium at cutting edge of design

The roof on the AAMI Stadium in Melbourne has 50% less material than typical stadium roofs and every element has more than one function, says engineer Peter Bowtell, project director for the stadium. The stadium's walls and roof are one complete system with no structural columns. The roof is made from three-dimensional steel arches and trusses to create an ethereal veil over spectators.
