Opinion: States should be wary of performance pay for teachers

States adopting performance pay for teachers as part of their bids for Race to the Top funds should consider the results of a study showing it did not improve student achievement or teacher retention in Chicago Public Schools, education writer Valerie Strauss argues in this blog post. Strauss writes that standardized tests were not created to assess teachers, and officials should be wary of adopting systems that research has not shown to be effective.
