Consider alternatives to repurposing Internet advertisements for the tiny mobile screen, a tactic that often fails as a user experience, VigLink CEO Oliver Roup writes. "Freemium" models can boost an application's future provided it presents the app without making it look cheap. Affiliate and referral marketing are space-efficient and revenue-generating. In-app purchasing of virtual goods can deepen engagement instead of losing an audience to the distraction of ads. "Monetization should not be an afterthought for developers. Business models should be considered first, and then developers should create or integrate technology that will enable the business model to be successful," Roup writes.
