The decision by officials in Alberta, Canada, to phase out the province's mandated standardised exams has reignited debate in other provinces over the merits of such exams. In Ontario, officials say they are consistently pleased by growth in students' scores. Educators, however, say they are concerned about the stress and strain on students and themselves, and some critics have said the exams lead to more rote memorisation and teaching to the test.
