Shale plays help U.S. cope with hurricane-caused output disruptions

U.S. oil production won't be as affected by hurricanes this year as in years past as output has shifted to onshore formations from the Gulf of Mexico, the Energy Information Administration said. The country got 26% of its oil production from the Gulf from 2007 to 2011, but that number fell to 19% in 2012 because of the shale production boom, figures show.
