Heart disease, diabetes risk seen in obese children

A new study shows a surprisingly high number of obese children are classified as having metabolic syndrome -- a group of symptoms linked to heart disease and diabetes in adults. The symptoms include high blood sugar, high triglycerides, low levels of "good" HDL cholesterol and abdominal obesity. While none of non-obese subjects in the study had the syndrome, 39% of those who were moderately obese had it and nearly half of the severely obese subjects did.
