Retrofitting Golden Gate Bridge is tricky task

The Golden Gate Bridge needs to be retrofitted to withstand earthquakes, and its status as an architectural landmark and beloved tourist attraction means the contractors involved need to find innovative ways to reinforce it without changing its distinctive look. "We're essentially rebuilding the bridge from the inside out," said bridge chief engineer Denis Mulligan.
