Brazil approves dam on tributary to Amazon River

Brazil approved a permit for a hydroelectric dam on the Madeira River, a tributary to the Amazon River. The Jirau dam will be part of a $13 billion hydroelectric complex that will generate 6,450 megawatts of power. Environmentalists say the dam's construction will flood the Amazon region and damage the ecosystem.
