Companies raise the bar for new hires

With so many job candidates available, many employers feel comfortable making prospective hires jump through extra hoops -- insisting on unpaid tryouts, asking intrusive personal questions and including role-playing in interviews. "Job seekers frequently face a process that makes the Spanish Inquisition seem tame," says human resources consultant Jennifer Berman.
