Military program aims to draw more teachers to special education

The federal Troops to Teachers program has helped 11,500 former military workers find careers as educators during the past 15 years. Recent research showed that students taught by teachers trained in the program improved more in reading than those taught by other teachers with the same level of classroom experience. The Obama administration hopes the program will increase the numbers of male teachers as well as help fill shortages of math, science and special-education teachers.
