Drop in student pilots could affect commercial airlines

The Federal Aviation Administration says student pilots will number 69,000 next year, an almost 30% decrease over 10 years. The drop in student pilots could impact the hiring of commercial pilots, as airlines draw from smaller pool of qualified applicants. Vern Moyer, owner of Moyer Aviation in Easton, Pa., said only 20% of his flight students aspire to become commercial pilots.
