Activists target sponsors to get Facebook to police its content

Dove and Nissan were among the brands dinged by a recent Facebook controversy: Activists slammed the brands over pages that glorified violence against women, even though neither advertiser intended to sponsor them. Nissan pulled advertising temporarily while Facebook addressed the issue. "Facebook advertising targets people's interests, not pages, and we do not select the pages our adverts appear on," says Dove's global director of marketing communications, Stacie Bright.
