Kabang, the dog who lost her upper jaw while protecting two girls from a motorcycle in the Philippines, is returning home after undergoing months of therapy for parasites and cancer as well as reconstructive surgery for her wounds. Kabang's upper jaw was sheared off by the motorcycle. After donations poured in, the dog was transported to and treated at William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis. Veterinarians were stunned by the damage and the dog's spirit. "Some of my colleagues said, 'This is beyond repair,'" recalls veterinarian Frank Verstraete, the hospital's chief of dentistry and oral surgery. "... The amount of blood loss this dog must have sustained was tremendous, but somehow she did survive."
