Turtle ancestor's fossil aids understanding of shell development

Scientists have analyzed the shell of Eunotosaurus, an ancestor of the modern turtle, to research how the shell develops. The turtle fossil appears to have T-shaped ribs similar to the modern turtle, however it lacked broad spines on its vertebrae, intercostal muscles and bony scales. Eunotosaurus was discovered more than 100 years ago and this fossil fills a 30- to 55-million-year gap in research on the species.
