Productivity, labor costs rise in first quarter

The productivity of U.S. workers rose 3.8% in the first quarter of 2004, stronger than many analysts had predicted. Year-to-year productivity gains came in at 5.5%, the largest increase in three decades. But labor costs also rose, an indication that inflation could enter the economic picture soon.
