Iowa newspaper looks at costs of GA airports

Municipal airports throughout Iowa received about $30 million in federal funding since 2007 to improve their facilities, according to the state's largest newspaper. The paper notes that some of those airports have fewer than 50 flight operations daily and questions whether such funding is a wise use of taxpayer money. But a study from the Iowa Department of Transportation notes that general aviation airports contribute $187 million a year to the state economy, and Ed Bolen, president of the National Business Aviation Association, says the airports are crucial to such functions as disaster relief and medical transport.
