Schapiro works to rebuild reputation of SEC

As the Securities and Exchange Committee takes a public beating over recent scandals and questions arise about its future role in financial regulation, Chairwoman Mary Schapiro is trying to quickly rebuild and preserve the agency. Her strategy involves bolstering enforcement and pursuing regulations covering everything from derivatives to corporate disclosures. "I wanted to be very clear almost from my first day -- not just with words, which are pretty easy to string together, but with actions -- that this is a new SEC that is moving in a decidedly different direction and at a decidedly different pace," Schapiro said.
