Virginia gears up for hurricane season with pet-emergency plans

In preparing for the hurricane season, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management is devising emergency plans for animals, including setting up shelters to accommodate pets during a major disaster. "Experience shows us that many pet owners are reluctant to evacuate without their pets," a state official said. "Strengthening Virginia's pet sheltering plan at the community level will help save lives."
