Middle-school administrators in Nashua, N.H., recently spoke with officials about student achievement in the middle grades and challenges, including retention, promotion and how to best serve struggling learners. At issue, some educators say, is the question of when to retain struggling students, with the practice becoming less common. "If a child is retained at the middle school level in particular, it increases quite a bit the chance that they'll become a drop out, and they do worse the second year than the first year," middle-school principal John Nelson said.
