Getting Merion Golf Club ready for the U.S. Open

Next week marks the beginning of the largest golfing event of the year -- the 113th U.S. Open -- which will take place at a historic, old-style architecture golf course in Ardmore, Pa. Merion Golf Club last hosted the event more than 32 years ago and is half the size of venues used for this championship in the 21st century. "It was a challenge to even think about bringing the U.S. Open to Merion," says Reg Jones, the USGA's senior director of the championship. "People said time had passed Merion by. But we thought it was more than worth it to try. It wasn't going to be easy and it was going to take some out-of-the-box thinking, but we wanted to see if it could be done."
