N.C. district joins with foundations to rise above challenges

Teachers at nine Project LIFT schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, N.C., school district have pledged to do whatever it takes to help students succeed and graduate from high school. At one school, where many students come from low-income families and lag behind academically, that can mean providing support in school -- and at home -- and recruiting top teachers. "It's the hardest thing I've ever done," said social studies teacher Matt Rankin. "Unless you're in here you have no idea."
