Signs that trees could topple during storms

Visible signs such as a forked trunk, rot or dead branch tips could indicate a tree is more likely to topple during a storm, writes Ann Carrns. The health of trees should be evaluated regularly, especially those in the "fall zone" that are likely to damage a property if they tumble, said Scott Spencer, worldwide appraisal and loss prevention manager with Chubb Personal Insurance. Professional arborists should be consulted when evaluating a tree's health, Spencer advised.
