Biotechnology crucial in meeting food target, USDA chief says

The United Nations' goal of increasing global food output 50% by 2030 will not be met without boosting the production of biotech crops, USDA Secretary Ed Schafer said at the Food and Agriculture Organization meeting held Wednesday. Schafer also said he did not expect "a positive agreement on biofuels" at the meeting, as FAO and other international agencies believe that U.S. subsidies and incentives for the products have contributed to recent food price hikes.
