Gusset plates force closure of third Minnesota bridge

Minnesota transportation officials shut down a bridge over the Mississippi River on Tuesday, citing corroded gusset plates. The 67-year-old high-truss bridge in the town of Winona was the third span to be closed since officials began special inspections of the bridges three months ago. State bridge engineer Dan Dorgan expressed surprise at the incidence of gusset plate problems. "We're sort of in a learning process, I'll have to admit that," he said.
