Ignorance can land travelers in hot water

Madelaine Gierc was a 16-year-old tourist visiting Greece in 2005 when she picked up a rock near the Parthenon and was quickly arrested, charged and jailed. She had violated a protection law that prohibits people from buying, selling, owning or excavating antiquities without a permit. Gierc said she had intended only to use the rock in a photo and was released after a couple days in jail. But the situation highlights an ongoing problem with tourists who are either ignorant of such laws or willfully choose to disobey them.
