The most common type of covering for pitched roofs remains asphalt shingles, writes Steve Roberts. He notes that the shingles come in a variety of sizes and colors and can last between 16 and 50 years, depending on their weight. In addition to shingles, installing proper flashings is also important to protect a roof from water damage, Roberts writes.
