Pew: Majority of Americans now own smartphones

Smartphones have been on a sales rampage in the U.S. for a while, and now it's official: A majority of people -- 56% -- own them, according to a Pew Research Center survey that pointed to wide -- and predictable -- variations depending on age and income. Meanwhile, comScore's latest quarterly survey showed little change in the period ended April compared to the previous quarter: Apple extended its lead slightly over Samsung Electronics among smartphone-makers, although both companies gained market share. Apple's iOS also narrowed the gap slightly on Android, which still enjoys a 52% share of the operating system market.
