States consider line between beauty treatments and medicine

Medi-spas are proliferating, performing minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox injections, facial peels and laser resurfacing, and some are offering surgical procedures such as breast augmentation, abdominoplasty and blepharoplasty. Many are unlicensed and run by doctors trained in unrelated specialties, and they allow nonmedical personnel to perform some procedures. Some states have started to implement tighter regulations on the facilities, such as licensing and truth-in-advertising requirements.
