States take a fresh look at medi-spas

Medi-spas are proliferating, offering minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox injections, facial peels and laser resurfacing, and some are offering surgical procedures such as breast augmentation, abdominoplasty and blepharoplasty. Many are unlicensed and run by doctors trained in unrelated specialties, and allow nonmedical personnel to perform some procedures, and states have started to implement tighter regulations. "It's the difference between four years of medical school and four to five years of residency versus beauty school," ASDS President and dermatologist Timothy Flynn said.
