Ultraviolet lighting gadget helps strawberries stay fresher

Studies show that keeping strawberries refrigerated and exposing them to ultraviolet light helps delay mold and spoilage. A team from the Department of Agriculture's Food Components and Health Laboratory in Beltsville, Md., and Sensor Electronic Technology in Columbia, S.C., has created a gadget with LEDs that emit ultraviolet rays without drying out the fruit. They're working to commercialize the technology for home refrigerators.
