Modern manufacturing remains a major employment generator, but not so much on plant floors in the U.S., since factory jobs have been spread throughout the world. Highly credentialed white-collar positions, many in engineering, and a smaller number of highly skilled factory jobs take up only some of the resulting slack in the U.S.
