Las Vegas school provides impoverished students with basic necessities

When principal Sherrie Gahn learned that students at her elementary school were taking home extra ketchup packets from the cafeteria so they'd have something to eat for dinner, she vowed to help. The school does its best to provide students with clothing and food and directs them to outside organizations that can also help, has hired several of the students' mothers to work in the school as support staff, and offers ESL and parenting classes. "The academics won't come if a child is hungry," Gahn says.
