Study shows limited use of osteoporosis drugs in nursing homes

A study involving 4,400 older New Jersey nursing home patients who had sustained a fracture finds only 11.5% were given osteoporosis medication to strengthen their bones. The researchers said guidelines call for strong consideration of osteoporosis drug therapy for these patients but said the risk of side effects may keep some physicians from prescribing the medications more often.
