Retailers to urge U.K. government not to raise VAT

The British Retail Consortium is warning the U.K. government that any jump in the value added tax rate "would have negative impacts on retailing and the wider economy." The group said that the VAT should not be extended to include food, children's clothing, books and other exempted items as it "would hit the most vulnerable members of society the hardest."
