Childhood abuse linked to specific brain changes

Brain scans of 51 women, with ages ranging from 18 to 45, showed that those exposed to abuse as children had deficits in the development of certain parts of their brain. Researchers said that sexual abuse affected an area of the brain responsible for genital sensation, while emotional abuse affected brain areas involved in self-awareness. The findings appear in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
