Independent RAC auditors criticize legislation to control auditing process

The American Coalition for Health Claims Integrity, which represents independent Medicare auditors, spoke out against proposed legislation that would give new limits to Medicare recovery auditor contractors and increase transparency. The coalition warned that limiting auditors would allow waste, fraud and abuse to continue and would "hamstring" auditors. But an American Hospital Association survey released Tuesday showed that hospitals appealing RAC denials in the first quarter of the year had a 72% success rate.
