Interior Dept. extends comment period for fracking rules

The public comment period for the Department of the Interior's proposed rules covering hydraulic fracturing on federal lands will be extended for 60 days, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said. Erik Milito, the American Petroleum Institute's upstream director, said such an extension will allow the industry to carefully study the proposed rules and compare them with existing state-level policies. "Many questions remain as this new rule has the potential to significantly slow domestic energy production, as well as damage national, state and local economies," Milito said.
