Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus under scrutiny

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus has been identified at 103 sites across 11 states, according to veterinarian Tom Burkgren, executive director of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians. The National Pork Board and the Iowa Pork Producers Association appropriated $527,000 for further research and efforts to stem the spread of the infection, which only occurs in swine. The disease is spreading geographically, although the rate of new infections is slowing, according to veterinarian Liz Wagstrom.
