Tiny engine deemed breakthrough using conventional tech

A Ford research and development center in the U.K. has employed variable valve timing, direct fuel injection and turbocharging in the tiny three-cylinder EcoBoost engine to achieve a rare "true breakthrough" using established engine technology. The effort, which cut fuel consumption while retaining power, has earned the EcoBoost honors as International Engine of the Year from Engine Technology International Magazine for the second time. "It’s economical in real-world conditions while the compact turbo helps ensure that the entire package can power larger vehicles like the Grand C-MAX with ease," commented Editor Dean Slavnich.
